WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT A HORSE SHOW?!?!
For many of you, this is a first time experience! Please remember to be flexible, go with the flow and enjoy yourself! Our best advice to you is to remember that competing at a horse show is a lot of “HURRY UP AND WAIT!” It will be hot, it will be a long day and we’ll all absolutely love every minute of it!
Your rider is responsible for the horse they are riding. Not mom, not dad…. The rider! This is part of the experience and part of the responsibility of riding and competing. Your rider must show up ready. All riders must have: Hunt coat, undershirt with collar and pin, hair net ( unless double braided 12 y/o and under) Field/dress boots( 12 y/o under paddock boots & jodstraps same color) Black velvet helmet or cover, Tan breeches, boot socks, black gloves and a belt. These are typical show items. There are times that the temp outside is brutal, the judge MIGHT excuse hunt coats, this is not a guarantee. Undershirts can be short or long sleeves in any color, absolutely no bibs allowed. Please bring a change of clothing for your child for after classes. NO SANDALS OR OPEN TOED SHOES for anyone please! This is a safety issue and we want to best represent ourselves and facility.
(Gymkhana is casual attire)
Remember this is a learning experience for your rider. The horse knows no ribbon color, sometimes we have no idea why the judge pinned the class the way they did, and we cannot ask ( this is a horse show rule ALWAYS) The judges at Barre have always been wonderful on giving the riders feed back. The time spent in the show arena is a mere snapshot of what our riders can do and the judge pins the class on their OPINION! Yup, we are paying for someone else’s opinion whether we agree or not. As a parent or spectator, it is hard not to cheer our riders on from the ring side, but we ask that you refrain until classes are pinned and just enjoy the show. If allowed, a W-O-W instructor will be ring side to assist riders in the arena.
STAY POSITIVE! Please remember your rider is most likely terrified to enter that show ring. They might not ride their best round, or demonstrate everything they are capable of doing. THAT IS OKAY! We want to encourage only positive behavior from our staff, riders, families and spectators. Negative comments, scolding or ‘trash talking’ is prohibited and offender will be asked to leave the show grounds immediately. We will see all kinds of ways to ride or handle a horse, some we do not agree with and some we follow. Please keep an open mind as you enter this next phase of the equestrian world!
PLEASE COME DIRECTLY BACK TO THE FARM once we depart from the show grounds, we will need all riders to unload horses and tack. We know you’re tired, hungry and thirsty. Your truck and trailer drivers are too(AND we have no air conditioning in the truck OR the trailer)! Remember we are a team and we need to help each other as much as possible.
SHOW DAY SCHEDULES are not schedules at all! There are multiple arenas going at once, and we have a class list. There is no way to know exactly when your riders class will run, or for how long. This is the “Hurry up and wait!” we are talking about. There is down time and time to get your hustle on. We ask Parents to please check with instructors before whisking your child off to the bathroom, tack trailer or food booth. If riders miss classes, there is no make up and they forfeit day/year end awards. This is a show rule. ALSO, please make sure you and your rider know the division they are entered in.
FAQ
Q:Why did my rider not get a blue ribbon?
A: Each class is a focus on one section of riding. We are competing to receive the opinion of the judge. We won’t please every judge in every aspect.
Q:My rider is done showing for the day, can we leave early?
A: NOPE, we are a team. We also have homes to get back to, cookouts to enjoy etc. Riders are responsible to stay to assist with horses and packing/unpacking the trailer.
Q:Can we skip Saturday night prep?
A: NOPE . This is part of the responsibility of competing. We do not condone riders who aren’t willing to put the effort in themselves. Success is made by hard work and education!
Q:Can I bring my dog to the show?
A: Although allowed by the show grounds, please do not. This is a horse show, there are dog shows for this purpose. We can SOMETIMES make an exception upon request, but typically dogs tied by the trailer are a safety hazard.
Q:I want our entire family to come and watch! Is that okay?
A: Again, please don’t. Take videos, photos, zoom calls. COVID or not, your rider might not want their Great Great Aunt to come from the hills of Montana to watch. Please speak to your rider first and also respect their wishes.
Q:Can we do a photo shoot?
A:We are busy! We want you to have lasting memories, but pulling riders away from their responsibilities is frustrating to staff, puts a crimp in the schedule and you’ll find we either have all the time, or none of the time on our hands!
Q:Where do we sit?
A: Bring chairs! There are metal bleachers to watch, but we will spend most of our time by the trailers.
Q:How do I pay for classes?
A:Class fees ARE NOT included in the invoice payments to our facility. You may pre-register, or register the day of at the show grounds.
